"This is the first iteration of a developing report prepared with John Hitchin and Anna Waldie at Stories of Change. It provides a new definition of place, and explains five ways place can be an instrument of social change. We will be developing the work with deeper and wider reviews of the literature, and working with our growing community of practice to explore potential innovation in the U.K. context. As will be clear from contributions to the Substack next year, I see place as one of the four pillars of a relational social policy. "

We are delighted to share our final report on this stage of our work.

This report marks the end of the first phase, and the tidying up of much of what we have shared on this Substack. If you’ve followed to date, then hopefully you will see the same thread, just a little clearer.

We are really excited to get this out into the world, see how people use it and have some conversations.

It is not the final word - far from it. We can already see things that we want to work on further, explore with others, and critically challenge. But we are excited about the potential of this work, and where it can go.

Very finally - it’s stressed in the report, but we want to repeat that this only happened thanks to the support and work of many others. We are grateful for their collaboration and input.
